Between April 2020 and April 2021 Florida gained an estimated 329,717 new residents. Not the state’s common expatriate or politically motivated immigrant communities, but from within the United States. The pandemic reportedly drove this desire for a change in scenery, and Florida does have that “I live where you vacation” aesthetic. The trend of in-migration was propelled by the pandemic forcing people to face their living situations for 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with little to no escape many realizing they didn’t love their “home” situations.
Florida was the third most popular moving destination during 2020-2021, with U-Haul stating that from the stats it garnered from over 2-million customer transactions. The attractiveness of Florida is deeper than the beaches as many find the comparably lower housing costs, aided by paying less than 1% in property taxes, as well as no income taxes to be fiscally attractive and advantageous. This steady growth is expected to continue into 2025, with Florida gaining an average of 845 new residents a day, according to state projections.
